What You'll Need for Your PBLWorks Workshop

We're excited to work with your school — here's what to have ready so your session runs smoothly.

We want your team set up for success from the start — here's what each participant will need on hand at your upcoming PBLWorks workshop. Please share the technology list with participants ahead of time.

Technology Checklist

Each participant will need their own device — tablets (iOS or Android) can't be used as a primary device.

Device

Desktop, laptop, Chromebook, or Surface Pro 4 (or newer), plus:

  • Speakers or headphones (built-in or external)
  • A webcam (built-in or external)

Internet connection

Broadband, wired or wireless, with at least 3 Mbps upload/download. Not sure of your speed? Check it here.

Operating System

macOS 10.10 or newer, Windows 10 or newer, or Chrome OS.

Web browser

Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft Edge.

Software

A Google-enabled account for Google Docs is recommended.

Nice to have

A printer, if desired.

 

For Online Sessions

You'll also need the free Zoom video conferencing app.

Please join from your own individual space — home, classroom, or elsewhere — rather than gathering as a group in one room. This lets everyone show up fully on camera, engage with their own materials (we'll use Nearpod), and move freely between breakout rooms (Learning Circles, Project Teams, Ransom Pairs or Trios, Feedback Teams) throughout the session.

 

Room and Materials Checklist (In-Person Sessions)

To set up your team for a great in-person experience, please have the following read in each workshop room:

Room setup
  • A presenter/media table at the front of the room
  • An LCD projector with a large screen (or multiple screens)
  • A microphone for the presenter, or external computer speakers
  • Power strips for charging laptops
  • Tables that seat 4-6 participants each
  • Access to wall space around the room's perimeter for posting work
Supplies
  • Blank paper (50 sheets)
  • Chart paper — 2 pads of 50 sheets each (sticky, Post-it style works best)
  • 40-50 bold markers, for writing on posters
  • Post-it notes — about 10 packs, 100 count, 3"x3"
  • Blank name tag stickers, one per participant

Additional Materials for Specific Sessions

PBL 101
  • Printed copies (one set per participant) of the three documents in this folder.
Sustainable Future Project Slice
  • Printed copies (one set per participant) of the Go Fish Catch Tracker
  • Index cards (36)
  • Jelly beans (one 3.5 oz bag per group of 4)
  • Skittles or M&Ms (one 3.14 oz bag per group of 4)
  • Small paper bowls, cereal-style (one per group of 4)
  • Chopsticks (one pair per participant)
Art of Persuasion Project Slice
  • Sharpened pencils with erasers, for drafting
  • Optional: art supplies such as colored pencils, extra markers, construction paper, magazines, glue sticks, and scissors
Making Space for Change Project Slice
  • Large chart paper pad with grid lines (20 sheets per room)
  • Tape measures (2-3) and/or rulers or meter sticks
  • Graph paper, 8.5" x 11" (100 sheets)
  • Optional: clipboards, one per group
Community Voice Project Slice
  • Optional: clipboards, one per group of 4
