Does PBL actually work across different academic disciplines, or is it better suited to certain fields?
It works broadly. In Western Michigan University's pilot, faculty successfully applied Gold Standard PBL across nursing, business, and fine arts — disciplines with very different content and assessment norms. Design PBL is built around your own course's Driving Question and learning goals, so the framework adapts to your field rather than forcing your field to adapt to it.

How does PBL work in large lecture courses or hybrid/online formats?
This is a real consideration, not a solved problem — WMU's pilot found that large classes and hybrid formats needed additional scaffolding to implement PBL well. It's worth planning for smaller team structures, staggered milestones, or a phased rollout rather than assuming a 300-student lecture converts to PBL exactly like a 20-student seminar.

Design PBL is a 3-day workshop, and faculty leave with a complete draft unit ready to pilot — not a finished, polished course. Expect further iteration after that first pilot; WMU's experience suggests protected planning time and a faculty community of practice matter more to long-term success than getting it perfect on day one.

Why does PBL matter right now, more than it might have a few years ago?
AI has changed what a take-home assignment or problem set can measure, since students can now generate solutions instantly. MIT's 2026 AI Committee report specifically pointed to project-based learning as a response — arguing that AI actually makes more ambitious, real-world projects possible, since students can spend less time on routine technical work and more time on design and problem-solving.
